Coming into Spring, everyone's feeling a bit stagnant, out of sorts, back into hold habits, out of balance.
We always talk about how to find the ever elusive ’balance’ in life but I'll come out with a straight up truth bomb. In my opinion, we will never truly find it. Or at least not the version of balance we are thinking of. Balance is not a constant state, it's a balancing (funny that) act like a set of scales with two opposing forces.
We are constantly swaying like a pendulum, moving towards balance. It will undoubtedly swing out of whack at times, but you can find a hack or a system that works for you tobring you back to balance, and then create habits that keep you there for longer.
It’s not so much about whether you fall out of balance, it’s about how long you choose to stay there.
Because it is always a choice.
In most cases, the first thing to be compromised in times of stress, busy-ness, grief, turmoil, etc. is our health. Shit is undoubtedly going to hit the fan at some point so you need to prepare accordingly. Is it something you can pre-prepare for dire situations? Like having batch frozen meals ready for when you know you’re not going to have time to cook. Or maybe you like to have your own nourishing and cleansing protocol to follow after a day of inevitable crappy eating (please do not use exercise as a punishment in this situation - that's another can of worms for another day).
The trick is to be AWARE, notice if your bad habits start to out weigh the good. You went and got a pot and parmi one week because hells yeah, but when did it become every week? You stayed up late a few nights in a row but now you find you're staying up late every night and it's effecting you at work. You got yourself a treat one day for dessert because chocolate, but when did it become half a block every night? (lol we all know it’s the whole block).
Know your vices, know where you tend to fall back into old habits that don't serve you or your health. Be conscious and aware of when you feel yourself slipping and gently bring yourself back.
I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve that help me after a day or a period of time where I didn't make great choices.
A couple of them are:
- Intermittent fasting: I particularly like this after a dinner where I overate or just ate typically inflammatory foods. The body knows how to detox and cleanse by itself, just give it a rest, drink lots of water and it will do the rest.
- Incorporating leafy greens and healthy fats at every meal the following day (generally avoiding grains and quick carbs - please note this is not how I eat everyday, just when I feel I need to recalibrate)
- Exercise is great as sweat is indeed a good way to release toxins from the body (exercising to rule out calories consumed does not work....)
- Being gentle on my mind as well, it's not just our bodies that take a beating. Meditation/mindfulness is always a goodie, and recognising when you need to rest
I choose to do these things because they help my body feel lighter after feeling heavy and sluggish.
Given the chance, the body will heal itself by itself.
