They are a big part of my vision to empower others to do the same for themselves and take back control of their health.
Quite the misnomer, they are more accurately described as pure plant extracts. They are the aromatic, volatile liquid that is extracted when the plant material is exposed to steam distillation or cold-pressing. The essential oil is where you will find the majority of the naturally occurring chemicals that give each essential oils their distinct scent and properties.
Plants are nature, just as we are. They assimilate and metabolise in our body very easily. They are an incredibly accessible way for us to utilise the supportive and protective properties that plants use to fight off environmental threats.
We just need to go back to basics.
I purchased my first essential oils in May 2016 because I wanted to start making my own skin products, cleaning products and generally bring my healthcare back into the home without using so many pills and pharmaceuticals.
Look up any natural recipe online and you will be hard pressed to find one without essential oils!
Little did I know I would barely scratch the surface of what they were capable of in the months following, and that while doTERRA are indeed an essential oils business - they are also so much more than that.
There are many essential oils on the market, but I encourage you to (in fact you must) do your research.
There are a couple of reasons why I decided to use doTERRA oils.
And I know I can rest assured that I'm voting for sustainable and ethical business practices every time I purchase doTERRA oils.
It is after this process of sourcing, harvesting and distilling occurs that doTERRA continue to work with the countries through their Healing Hands Foundation.
We know lemon juice does wonders for cleansing and detoxing our insides, and we drink it with ginger when we're sick. We know drinking peppermint tea helps settle an upset stomach after eating, and we know lavender has a calming effect and has been used for years to help people sleep. My family's home has always had tea tree and eucalyptus in the laundry for cleaning, and I'm sure if you ask your parents or grandparents you will find traces of essential oils or herbs being used in the home like this too.
We know these things, we just need reminding of our intuitive knowing.
doTERRA are the leading distributor in the world for essential oils with over 5 million customers, and that is largely due to their dedication to purity and quality. There is not a single batch of essential oils that get sent out to customers that is contaminated or adulterated in any way. These oils are considered a step above organic (however wanky that may sound). If you care enough about the quality of food going into your stomach, you should care just as much about what you're inhaling and putting on your skin.
If you weren't aware, some of the organic products you're buying only require 95% of the ingredients to be certified organic and those organic requirements differ in every country. doTERRA weren't satisfied with this (and why should we be?) so they designed a new benchmark called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade which means 100% purity of oil with no contaminants, pesticides, heavy metals, fillers, synthetic ingredients or any changes to the state of the oil whatsoever. It is simply filtered for natural bi-products like dirt and twigs from the harvesting... the way mother nature intended.
Speaking of which, the growing and harvesting process is where the dedication to purity really begins.
Rather than building and owning all their own farms in the U.S, doTERRA partner with local farms in over 40 different countries in order to source the highest quality of essential oils available.
More than half of those countries are considered developing nations - which really means more than half of them need our help.
Sourcing from either their natural country of origin or the best environment due to humidity, soil condition and sustainability practices, yields a higher quality oil. But this Co-Impact Sourcing model wasn't designed to just benefit doTERRA - it's called co-impact for a reason.
It was developed to create long-term, mutually beneficial supplier partnerships while creating sustainable jobs and providing reliable income in underdeveloped areas.
The farmers are treated ethically, and provided on-time payments at a fair price. In fact, the farmers in Somalia that harvest Frankincense are paid up to 10 times more than their fellow farmers. doTERRA work directly with those farmers, and not with the middlemen, in order to ensure they have acceptable working conditions and are actually receiving the payments.
The Healing Hands Foundation is doTERRA's non-profit organisation, and they work closely with the developing communities where our oils are sourced from to provide hope, free them of disease and poverty, and empower them with the tools needed to become self-reliant.
100% of all donations to the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation or proceeds from certain item sales (Hope oil, Rose hand lotion) go directly to those receiving aid in Haiti (Vetiver), Somalia (Frankincense), Guatemala (Cardamom), Madagascar (Ylang Ylang) and Nepal (Wintergreen) - just to name a few.
Not only does every bottle of essential oil purchased support the activities listed above, but that same bottle pays 7 small business owners like myself.
Purchasing doTERRA is not only supporting developing countries, it's also supporting small business.
If you would like to get your hands on some of the top essential oils on the market,
and contribute to this conscious eco-system I just described, all you need to do is ask.
